Should I use Silverlight or WPF for my new Enterprise Application?

This is the single most popular question I get from customers these days; keep in mind much of my job is about the web. Remember just a few years ago the sacrifice tree decision tree for an application was whether it sl v wpfwould be a Web app or a Desktop app? There was much we had to sacrifice for the Web, usually a great user interface, fidelity, etc…..everything that becomes a great user experience.

Today, that is changing rapidly. Probably more so shortly but that’s another post to be made later!

Silverlight has changed the landscape of Rich Internet Applications. Since the launch of Silverlight in 2007 when Silverlight was viewed merely as a Flash competitor through today as Silverlight has become the best choice for RIAs as well as a popular choice behind the firewall.

Why is Silverlight a popular choice behind the firewall? There are reasons ranging from the small to the large. However, IMO the top needle movers in no particular order are:

  • TCO
  • Time to market
  • Features
