The Long Road to Lima

The journey to Lima from Cuenca won’t rank as one of the best I have ever undertaken. The first leg was an overnight trip from Cuenca, Ecuador to Piura in Peru. The bus which was advertised as being direct was nothing of the sort, being the typical Ecuadorean bus which stopped everywhere, even driving around a Cuencan suburb before hitting the open road towards the Peruvian border – where we had to change (to an admittedly better) bus to go through the border formalities then onto Piura.

800 Degrees Wood Fired Pizza and Pub and Winterfest 2010

Recently went to 800 Degrees Wood Fired Pizza and Pub (100200 Lima Rd., Ft. Wayne) http://www.800degrees.net/ as I have been hearing about how good their pizza is (and I was not disappointed with their pizza) and about the craft beers they have on tap. One side of the establishment is family friendly and the other side is the pub (21 and over). There is outdoor seating during the warmer months. The pub side has seven chairs at the bar, two booths and numerous tables. The beers on tap were Bells Hopslam, Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale, Jefferson’s Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout, Boulevard Nut Cracker Ale, and Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat. They also have 13 different bottled beers to choose from. In speaking with Matt Rogers, Chef/GM, when the Hopslam is gone Dogfish Head 90 Minute will be on tap.

The largest metropolitan area in Western Canada, Vancouver ranks third largest in the country and the city proper ranks eighth. The city of Vancouver has a population of just over 578,000 and its Census Metropolitan Area exceeds 2.1 million people. Montreal is the second-largest city in Canada and the largest city in the province of Quebec. Originally called Ville-Marie (’City of Mary’), the city takes its present name from Mont-Royal, the triple-peaked hill located in the heart of the city, whose name was also initially given to the island on which the city is located, or Mont Réal as it was spelled in Middle French, (Mont Royal in present French). As of the 2009 census, 1,856,449 people resided in the city, ranking it as the sixth largest city overall across Canada and the United States. The population of the metropolitan area (known as Greater Montreal) was 3,635,571 at 2006 census. As of 2009, Statistics Canada identifies Montreal’s Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) (land area 4,259 square kilometres (1,644 sq mi)) as Canada’s second most populous with a population of 3,868,831. New York is the most populous city in the United States, and the center of the New York metropolitan area, which is one of the most populous urban areas in the world. A leading global city, New York exerts a powerful influence over worldwide commerce, finance, culture, fashion and entertainment. As host of the United Nations headquarters, it is also an important center for international affairs. Tourism is important to New York City, with about 47 million foreign and American tourists visiting each year. Major destinations include the Empire State Building, Ellis Island, Broadway theatre productions, museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and other tourist attractions including Central Park, Washington Square Park, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Garden, luxury shopping along Fifth and Madison Avenues, and events such as the Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village, the Tribeca Film Festival, and free performances in Central Park at Summerstage. Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States, founded on July 16, 1790. The City of Washington was originally a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia until an act of Congress in 1871 effectively merged the City and the Territory into a single entity called the District of Columbia. It is for this reason that the city, while legally named the District of Columbia, is known as Washington, D.C. The city is located on the north bank of the Potomac River and is bordered by the states of Virginia to the southwest and Maryland to the other sides. The District has a resident population of 599,657; because of commuters from the surrounding suburbs, its population rises to over one million during the workweek. The Washington Metropolitan Area, of which the District is a part, has a population of 5.3 million, the ninth-largest metropolitan area in the country. (based on a wikipedia article)

6. Chicago (USA)

Boston city proper had a 2008 estimated population of 620,535, making it the twenty-first largest in the country. Greater Boston as a commuting region includes six Massachusetts counties, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Plymouth, and Worcester, all of Rhode Island and parts of New Hampshire; it is home to 7.5 million people, making it the fifth-largest Combined Statistical Area in the United States. Lima Restaurant & Lounge - McPherson Square, DC ~ Lunching in the DMV

For my cousin’s 25th birthday, us ladies went to Lima Restaurant and Lounge off K St NW. We chose this place because we could eat dinner and then stay to party afterwards. They serve ‘Latin-infused’ cuisine. Street parking is difficult in the city, but there’s valet parking for $6 if you’re only eating dinner, otherwise it’s $20. The closest metro station is McPherson Square on the orange line.

The lower picture is their covered seating area with heat lamps outside. The bouncer checking ID’s to get into the place was really rude to us when we asked him to take a picture of us. Not cool.

Lima’s mayor leads Peru’s presidential poll one year from elections

Presidential elections in Peru are one year away. Last week, a poll by El Comercio and Ipsos Apoyo revealed some interesting tendencies in how the public plans to vote, broken down by region, socio-economic levels (A to E, A being richest) and gender.

Luis Castañeda, Lima’s quiet mayor, leads the polls, with 23 percent of the polled saying they’d vote for him if the elections were tomorrow. Keiko Fuijimori is still in second place, and is the number one choice for women voters. Ollanta Humala, the nationalist candidate, has taken in the lead in regions outside of the capital, and trails Fujimori by three percentage points on the national level.
